A Few Concepts To Consider:
No one should ever be lost on your web site! When a site is very deep and complex, a few "layers" of navigation may be employed, but always keep the main choices visible.
When you're considering how to arrange the navigation on your web site, create an outline. Organize your material so that each topic has its own page -- up to a few hundred words or so per page. Create main topics -- those will be your main "buttons"; and sub topics. A typical web site might have a number of main navigation buttons/links/tabs, with some secondary items listed under each. Every primary and secondary link represents a page.
For e-commerce sites, create a similar kind of outline for your products, organizing them by category. Allow visitors to select a category of product, and then a specific product, and let them zoom in for larger views and more information than available at first glance.
